Testimonials
“Working in community Respirology has been a deeply rewarding experience for me. The best part is being able to operate in a hybrid role, managing a diverse out-patient clinic with hospital-based care that serves a busy in-patient chest ward with step-down beds alongside procedural demands. In Kitchener-Waterloo, we are fortunate to have a range of sub-specialty clinics including the Lung Diagnostic Assessment Program (LDAP), Cystic Fibrosis clinic, Tuberculosis, ILD Clinic, Malignant Pleural Effusion clinic, Chronic Long-Term Ventilation and Pulmonary Rehabilitation - providing comprehensive respiratory care in our region.
I have derived a great deal of job satisfaction from the community-focused approach in this setting and close collaboration with our primary care doctors as well as allied team and other sub-specialist services. We often meet up for multi-specialist CME rounds and collaborate on delivering excellent patient care. We are closely affiliated with McMaster's Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and have medical students, residents and fellows rotate through which provides a lot of opportunity for teaching. Given that the group shares responsibilities for the various on call duties, clinics, teaching, etc., this type of structure has really helped in my work-life balance as well and minimize long-term burnout risk.”

“Working in a community centre with proximity to an academic centre (McMaster) is the best of both worlds! I can mentor learners, practice clinical medicine, collaborate with colleagues, and forge relationships with sub-specialists as a nearby academic centre. There is no pressure to do any research, however; those opportunities are available through McMaster if you are interested.
Our Respirology group services a large and diverse catchment area, offering a breadth of sub-specialty and general respirology clinics. We are a referral centre for many nearby communities, allowing us to transfer patients to our in-patient unit when specialised pulmonary care is needed. Although we cover a lot of ground and clinics, it feels sustainable, as we share the call load and in-patient load. This allows for a work-life balance so that there is time to balance professional aspirations with person interests and priorities!”
